Cuando haces viajes largos... los temas de conversación se agotan y a pesar de que la radio es nuestra gran aliada, la mayoría de emisoras siempre ponen lo mismo. Por eso, creemos que cuando viajas tan importante es preparar la ropa, la comida o revisar que todo funcione bien como organizar las canciones que te van a acompañar durante todas las horas de trayecto.

The pictures say it all with this custom VW T3 Doka. Everything on this double-cab has been redone. It has a custom bed liner and that’s just the start. The interior has been completely re-upholstered including the seats and doors. This double-cab even has a custom console complete with meters, as well as a wooden steering wheel. Recorriendo la Ruta 66 en una VW T3 por @vanandgo

Uno de los viajes que tengo pendientes de hacer y que me hace especial ilusión es recorrer la mítica Ruta 66. Es un viaje que requiere de bastante preparación, tiempo y recursos. Pero estoy seguro que en un futuro lo realizaré.

Precisamente esto es lo que hicieron durante 10 días Joel Schat y Sean Parker, dos amigos que decidieron emprender juntos esta aventura a bordo de una furgoneta Volkswagen T3. Joel Schat es un chaval que ha estado viajando alrededor de Estados Unidos para grabar timelapses de sitios espectaculares. Por otra parte, Sean Parker es fotógrafo, así que formaron un tándem perfecto para documentar el viaje.

Durante el viaje fueron grabando pequeños vídeos para compartir con los demás las vivencias y aventuras que iban encontrando por el camino.

Este fue el recorrido que realizaron, siempre a bordo de su furgoneta VW T3 para que el viaje fuera todavía más especial si cabe.

Los vídeos son cortos, pero están grabados con una calidad buena y muestran de una manera resumida los sitios más interesantes por dónde fueron pasando. Desde recorrer el desierto, a saltar acantilados o parar a dormir en uno de los hoteles más emblemáticos de Estados Unidos.

Sin duda un recorrido por lugares míticos y llenos de historia. Un viaje que seguramente recordarán durante toda la vida.

I bought my first VW Westfalia Vanagon camper back in 1999, and have since owned five of them. I finally settled on a gorgeous 1991 model—lucked into via Craigslist for $9,000 a few years ago.

As I’ve written in Outside and The New York Times, a camper-converted Vanagon, especially a 4wd Syncro, is truly the Ultimate Adventure Vehicle. Our Westy is also a mobile office, motel, and grocery-getter. It’s compact enough for town with plenty of comforts—rotating chairs and slide-out tables, kitchen, headroom for changing from wetsuit to city clothes, and enough interior length to swallow a ten-foot surfboard.

But this freedom isn’t free. To #Vanlife creator Foster Huntington, the freedom of his 27-year-old Syncro was so expensive that he upgraded to a camper-backed (and far more reliable) Toyota Tacoma. “From afar, VW vans are very romantic,” he wrote. “Living in one is a totally different story.”

Yet most of us don't cover 40,000 miles a year like Huntington, so I’ll probably drive my Westy ‘til I die. So far, I’ve learned a few things about outfitting and owning a purpose-built, affordable, reliable camper. Following are a few hard-won lessons and essential gear from 15 years behind the wheel.

Shoulder-Fired Missile Boxes

Army surplus shoulder-fired missile boxes are an inexpensive, tough means of carrying your tools and requisite spare parts. I also drilled holes into the fiberglass roof of the van and bottom of the boxes so I can securely bolt them down.

Documental de casi 2 horas donde se cuenta la experiencia de una pareja, con sus 3 niños pequeños, y su intento de vivir con sólo lo esencial..., aunque sólo sea por una temporada.

Una de las metas más difíciles en la vida es determinar exactamente lo que necesita para vivir. Como co-fundadores de un sitio sobre la vida simple (faircompanies.com), hemos pasado los últimos ocho años examinando las vidas no comprometidos de los demás, pero este verano hemos tenido la oportunidad de probar micro-vivir de primera mano cuando hicimos las maletas nuestra familia de 5 en una caravana Westfalia para un roadtrip filmación a través del noroeste del Pacífico.

Limitándonos a una mochila por persona, los cinco nos mudamos a nuestra casa rodante de 50 pies cuadrados (un 1981 VW Westfalia "Westy", compró usado fuera de craigslist). Nos encontramos con el camino decidido a cocinar todas nuestras comidas (cocina de propano y refrigerador incluidos) y para crear nuestra casa cada noche en un lugar diferente (parques de RV no incluidos, orinal bebé incluido).

One of the most elusive goals in life is determining just what you need to live. As co-founders of a site on simple living (faircompanies.com), we've spent the past eight years examining the unencumbered lives of others, but this summer we had the opportunity to try out micro-living first-hand when we packed our family of 5 into a Westfalia campervan for a filming roadtrip through the Pacific Northwest.

Limiting ourselves to one backpack per person, the five of us moved into our 50-square-foot mobile home (a 1981 VW Westfalia "Westy", purchased used off craigslist). We hit the road determined to cook all our own meals (propane stove & refrigerator included) and to create our home every night in a different location (RV parks not included, infant potty included).

With no advanced reservations and only interviews to guide us, we visited the homes of regulars in the tiny house world. With each stop we picked up some new piece of wisdom about life's essentials. Tiny house builder Dee Williams (Olympia, WA) asked us to consider: "What do you want to hold in your arms when you die?" Boeing engineer and Seattle micro-apartment designer Steve Sauer explained he's less interested in simplicity and more focused on having control over the things in his life. Oregon Coast surfboard-maker Lanny Shuler thinks you can be happy anywhere as long as you give your mind time to heal through meditation.
Between interviews we found places to sleep on small side roads, downtown streets and even a Walmart parking lot (they're well-known for being open to overnighters). We learned to live with our chosen basics: a frying pan, 1 pot, a wooden spoon, some utensils and a few plates, Swiss Army knife, castile soap (for dishes, body, hair), water bottles, sunscreen, a few changes of clothing and a smartphone (for navigation and communication).

More importantly, we discovered how it feels to live close: to each other (3 to a bed for some of us) and to nature (with a home so light and permeable, the outdoors became part of our home). We explored forest bathing in old growth redwood groves and Olympic Peninsula rainforests and lakefront, pushed the limits of "freedom to roam" (e.g. the Swedish Allmansrätten), mingled with accidental pantheists.

"Summer of (family) love" is a roadtrip film that brings together some of the bigger names in the tiny house world with one family's attempt to live deliberately with just the essentials, if only for one season.

Alberto Schmidt dejó de lado su trabajo por el fútbol y, desde octubre, organiza un viaje de 500 vehículos y dos mil personas para ir por tierra a Brasil.

Todo está listo para mayo. El viaje será largo y cansador. Cerca de 800 kilómetros de manejo diarios por cinco días. Pero lo siente como si fuera su deber: planificar la ruta en detalle, fijar lugares de camping, mapear las estaciones de servicio, anotar requerimientos del clima, las necesidades de seguridad. En definitiva, categorizar cada fragmento del camino.

Un mes después tendrá que hacer el mismo recorrido, pero con 500 autos tras él.

Así será la travesía de Alberto Schmidt, quien junto a su esposa, Paulina Tanaka, y su hija, de dos años, realizarán próximamente para planificar la ruta que tomará en junio, junto a la mayor caravana de hinchas que se ha organizado en los últimos años. ¿El destino? Brasil. ¿El objetivo? Ir a apoyar a la selección en el próximo Mundial del Fútbol.
